Earle Hyman, a classically trained actor of steady grace, imposing presence and consummate skill, died Friday at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, NJ. He was 91. Hyman’s career on and off-Broadway spanned more than six decades and a multiplicity of Shakespearean roles at Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival. But it was as Dr. Cliff Huxtable’s sympatico dad Russell on NBC’s The Cosby Show that Hyman reached his widest audience, earning him an Emmy nomination in 1986. Continue reading

Renowned Oregon landscape architect J. Douglas Macy has died.

Macy, 72, is responsible for many of Portland’s most beloved places: bustling Pioneer Courthouse Square, often called Portland’s living room; the Vietnam Veterans of Oregon memorial, a calm spiraling path that winds up a hill in Washington Park; and Portland State University’s urban plaza.

A founding member of the urban design firm Walker Macy in 1976, Macy was known as a leader and a mentor to a generation of Pacific Northwest designers.

He’s shaped public and private landscapes across the state, including the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Black Butte Ranch and Centennial Park in Central Oregon, and the Capitol Mall in Salem.

Macy was born in Caldwell, Idaho, and grew up in Madras, Oregon, in a ranching family. Continue reading

Bob Eberhard

Redmond dairy, community leader Bob Eberhard dies at 82

Mayor, friend, others salute his legacy

 

Robert L. “Bob” Eberhard, the familiar face and voice of Redmond-based Eberhard’s Dairy Products, died Tuesday at his Redmond home, ending his battle with cancer, family and colleagues said He was 82.

Bob Eberhard was born May 6, 1935 in Prineville to John and Nelda Eberhard. In 1953, Bob graduated from Redmond Union High School.  He attended Central Oregon Community College before transferring to Oregon State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in business with a technical minor in dairy products.  Bob was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Bob met his wife Kaye at OSU and they were married on July 3, 1958, and were together for 57 years until Kaye passed away on March 25, 2016.  They had two children: Theodore Lee, who died in April 2011 from ALS, and Holly Lynn Eberhard-Maloney, who survives.  Also surviving are grandson James David (JD) Maloney, Jr., and two step grandchildren: Connor Flanagan and McKenzie Flanagan.
